Hidden Costs of Cruising
The hidden cost of cruising can quickly add up. Know before you go.

I’ve posted before about how cruising can be a great value for your money.  What other type of vacation can you pay $40 a day and get your room and all food (and quite a bit of entertainment) included?

There can be negatives though, and one of them are the “hidden costs” associated with taking a cruise. Check out my list of the top 10 hidden costs of taking a cruise and ways to avoid them.

Budget Vacations–Great Value in Cruises

Liberty of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas

You’ve been working non-stop it seems and you really need to getaway.  But you are limited on funds and quite possibly even time.  What do you do?
Living in Florida, Miami to be specific, I’ve found great value and enjoyment in taking 3, 4, 6, and 7-night Caribbean cruises.  Many times you can have a vacation where you’re paying less than $100 a day and quite often, as low as $40.

On a quick search on Kayak.com for cruises out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida for February 2013, the prices ranged from as low as $179 for a 4 night cruise on Carnival to $349 for a 6 night Western Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean.

Beijing China

***One single warning – DON’T DRINK THE WATER or HAVE ANYTHING MADE FROM THE WATER ie. MOCHA FRAPPICCINO.

September 2010-Monday night began my 72+ hours of hell in China. In Mexico it is called Montezuma’s Revenge, I’m not exactly sure what it is called in China, but I call it General Pao’s Revenge, and it isn’t fun. If you read my article on Shanghai, I noted not to drink frozen drinks while in China. I made the mistake of having a Coke with ice, 2 Icee’s, a Dairy Queen frozen drink, and a Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks. In China, you must only drink water from sealed bottles and no ice. My mistake nearly caused me to miss going to the Great Wall of China. (more…)

We arrived to the Miami International Airport very anxious and a bit sleepy.  It was 4:30am and we’d only had about 3 hours sleep.  We were very lucky to have been able to use miles to upgrade our flights though even in First and Business class for 18 hours is exhausting.  To be quite frank, the flights were unremarkable for the most part.  Breakfast on the flight from Miami to Chicago consisted of a tex-mex omelet with a black bean and corn salsa-  please explain to me the chef’s mindset of adding beans to ANY airplane meal????  Needless to say, I didn’t eat any.  It was good none the less. Quick getaways are always fun. But with a limited amount of time for fun, you either need to already know the area you plan to visit, or do a bit of advance research so that you get the most out of your short trip. This time I wanted to go somewhere I hadn’t been before and I chose Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the epitome of capitalism at work and if you don’t do a bit of research, you’ll spend more money than you’ll need to and also not get as much for the money that you do spend. (more…)
