Las Vegas 2019 | Part 2| Free Hoover Dam Tour
Welcome back to part 2 of this Las Vegas Series everyone. Today we’re taking a scenic forty-five minute drive from Las Vegas out to see Hoover Dam for free.
Access to the area is free (especially if you park on the Arizona side), but only $10 to park on Nevada side. You have free access to walk the area as much as you like. Best get there early before the bus loads of tourists. It’s free to walk the perimeter however you can take optional tours of the dam for $30 and $15 for a tour of the power plant. But here, I give you a quick and free Hoover Dam Tour.
Construction started in 1931 where the Colorado River was diverted by digging 4 tunnels which were completed in 1932. Numerous men died in the sweltering heat that was upwards of 46c/114f as well as from illnesses and being struck by falling debris. The first concrete was placed on June 6, 1933.
Three years and more dead workers later, the first commercial generator went into full operation on October 26, 1936. In 1961, the 17th and final generator was installed and brought online generating upwards of 1,334, 800 kilowatts.
